The Other Side of the Sky
Opening Reception: Thursday, August 31, 7-10pm
Taking an investigative approach to the nature of the photograph, Charlie Kitchen’s practice utilizes analog means of photography to explore visual and physical space. Through a form of in-camera collage, Kitchen marries photographic and geometric representation, questioning the dualistic relationship between the two ideal, yet aesthetically opposite forms of representation.
Each of these large format works underwent an extensive process using a Toyo view camera, 3D modeling program, black paper, and acetate. Using the three-dimensional model as a template, a black paper mask replicating the dark slide of the large format film holder is cut and inserted into the camera before the shutter is released. A negative of the black paper mask is fabricated with acetate to expose the background of each form. This process allows for the selective exposure of each sheet of film and the dissection of this very small plane of vision.
The Other Side of the Sky will be accompanied by a publication of Kitchen's large format and 35mm photographs created on a road trip through the American southwest.
Charlie Kitchen received his BFA in Photography from Texas State University San Marcos, he currently resides in San Antonio, TX.
